Unley Stolen BMW Break-In: Key Storage Warning

South Australia Police reported that a Unley home was broken into before a BMW sedan was stolen from the driveway. The practical warning is to secure the path from entry point to car keys.

Security lesson: SAPOL said a Unley home was broken into before a BMW sedan was stolen from the driveway. Modern driveway theft can start inside the home, so protect the entry point, move keys out of sight, and add a sound layer before someone reaches the door.

When a car is stolen from a driveway after a break-in, the home entry and the vehicle need to be treated as one security chain.

What did police report in Unley?

South Australia Police said three teenagers were arrested after a car was stolen from Unley overnight on Saturday 20 June 2026. Police were called to Frederick Street shortly before 5am after reports that a home had been broken into and a BMW sedan had been stolen from the driveway.

SAPOL said the vehicle had GPS tracking and was later followed towards the northern suburbs. Police reported that the BMW attended a Blair Athol service station, then later stopped at Elizabeth Downs, where three suspects were arrested. Items reported stolen during the break-in were located dumped nearby.

What is the prevention lesson for homes and rentals?

The important pattern is not the car model. It is the chain: home entry, keys or items taken, driveway vehicle gone. A camera, GPS tracker or forensic exam can help after the theft. They do not stop the first quiet approach to the house.

For households, the before-entry plan is simple: lock the main entry and internal garage door, keep keys away from the front door, use sensor lighting where suitable, and make the home sound occupied. Victoria Police home burglary guidance specifically recommends occupancy cues, including dog cues and making noise to show someone is inside.

What should you check tonight?

For a driveway theft risk, the most useful check is the path from street to keys. Treat the home entry, garage access and vehicle as one chain, then remove the easy win before the next night.

AreaDo thisDo not do this
KeysMove car keys, garage remotes, wallets and handbags away from doors and windows.Do not leave keys on a hallway table, hook or kitchen bench visible from outside.
GarageLock the internal garage door even when the vehicle is parked in the driveway.Do not treat the garage remote as harmless if it gives access back into the home.
Keyless carUse a Faraday pouch or box if your vehicle model is at relay-theft risk.Do not rely on the driveway being close to the bedroom as protection.
Entry pathPlace a motion-triggered sound layer where approach is detected before the door.Do not rely on a camera alone; recording after entry is not deterrence.
Live trackingIf your vehicle is stolen and has tracking, contact police and share the location.Do not confront suspects or follow the vehicle yourself.

Deter the approach before the keys are reached.
